The
Dunderburg |
Off the coast of Harbor Beach, Michigan, 155 feet deep in Lake Huron rests the wreck of the Dunderberg. Launched at Detroit in 1867, the Dunderberg is a three-masted schooner, grossing 596 tons with a length of 187' and a beam of 33'. The Dunderberg was launched June 20, 1867 and captained by Charles Green. Down bound from Chicago to Detroit with a cargo of 40,000 bushels of corn, a crew of 10 and 6 passengers, she was hit by the steamer Empire State with a large crack in the starboard side the result. One female passenger on the Dunderberg was killed. After seeing photos of this at Our World Underwater in 2005 I decided to get into technical diving just so I could visit this wreck. And I wasn't disappointed when I finally dove on her this summer. It's an incredible wreck. It's about 135 feet to the deck and 155 to the bottom. It's very intact with lots to see. But what makes it special is the detail in the woodworking, making it unusual for a Great Lakes ship of that time. I can't wait to go back! |
