In 2005 my good friend and writing partner Erica Blake and I decided to sample wreck diving in all five of the Great Lakes in one season. We'd never heard of anyone doing this before and it sounded like a good way to spend the summer. We planned each trip a month apart, starting in June, and ending in October. We started our adventure diving the Pelee Passage of Lake Erie and headed next to the Straits of Mackinac where we could dive both Lake Michigan and Lake Huron in one weekend by diving either side of the Mackinac Bridge. Our next stop was Lake Huron's Sanilac Shores Preserve near Port Sanilac, Michigan. One month later we loaded the truck and headed to Kingston, Ontario to dive the excellent wrecks in Lake Ontario. Our final stop was Whitefish Point, Michigan, made famous of course by the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald, and considered the Graveyard of Lake Superior. I'd highly recommend divers give this a try. Spreading trips one month apart also gave us a great trip to look forward to each month. It's a great way to visit all of our excellent lakes and the communities supported by them. The results of our adventure were published in Issue 11 of Wreck Diving Magazine. |
